This guide will help you set up Nestopia, the well established NES emulator for playing NES games on your Windows or Linux system.

Step 1: Download Nestopia UE Emulator

  1. Download Nestopia UE via the above links.
  2. Choose the appropriate version for your operating system (Windows or Linux). This guide will use the Windows version.
  3. Your download will start shortly. Save the file to your desktop.

Step 2: Download and Install 7-Zip

  1. Visit 7-zip.org to download 7-Zip.
  2. Install 7-Zip by following the on-screen instructions.

Step 3: Extract Nestopia UE Emulator

  1. Locate the downloaded Nestopia UE file on your desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and extract the archive file.
  3. A new folder containing all extracted files will be created. Delete the original zip file to save space.

Step 4: Launch Nestopia UE Emulator

  1. Open the newly created Nestopia UE folder.
  2. Double-click the Nestopia UE executable file to launch the emulator.

Step 5: Configure Video Settings

  1. Go to “Options” in the menu.
  2. Select “Video”.
  3. Under “Mode”, change the resolution from 480p to 1080p.
  4. Change the filter from “Standard” to “Scale X” to smooth out the edges.
  5. Ensure you are running in 32-bit mode for the best graphics quality.
  6. Click “OK” to save your settings.

Step 6: Map Your Controller

  1. Go to “Options” in the menu.
  2. Select “Input”.
  3. Under “Type”, ensure “Pad 1” is selected for Player One.
  4. In the “Joysticks” section, your controller should be detected (e.g., Xbox One controller as XI input).
  5. Click on “Mapping” to start setting up your buttons.
  6. Double-click on each control (left, right, up, down, select, start, B, A, Auto fire B, Auto fire A) and press the corresponding button on your controller.
  7. If you have a second controller, select “Pad 2” and repeat the same process.
  8. Click “OK” to save your controller settings.

Step 7: Load a Game

  1. Go to “File” in the menu.
  2. Select “Open”.
  3. Navigate to the folder where your NES games are stored on your PC. For example, create a folder named “NES Games” on your desktop.
  4. Select the game you want to play, such as “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. The game will load and start.

Step 8: Adjust Screen Size

  1. Go to “View” in the menu.
  2. Select “Screen Size”.
  3. Choose from 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, or “Max” to adjust the screen size. For example, select “4x” for a larger display.

Step 9: Enter Full Screen Mode

  1. Go to “View” in the menu.
  2. Select “Full Screen” or press “Alt + Enter” on your keyboard to enter full-screen mode.
